We are making the hop garden ready for the Spring, cutting down and composting last years growth, expanding plantings of newer varieties, mulching, fertilising as the new seasons growth starts to emerge.

We do a tour of the Hook Norton Victorian steam brewery in Oxfordshire Cotswolds and taste their beer. Delivery is still done by horse & cart to local pubs.

A worthwile endeavour while in London is a tour of Fullers brewery in Chisick beside the Thames.

A tour of the UK hop collection in Kent with Peter Darby. The collection is used by Shepherd Neame in Faversham and has over 250 varieties

We tour the Czech brewery and drink several glasses of unfiltered, unpasteurised beer in the old cellars.

A hop of European origin was planted by the Kortegast brewing company on the banks of the Hokitika river in Westland NZ in the 1880′s. Still surviving to this day, this heritage variety is now made available to the NZ public.

Here at Eyrewell in North Canterbury, the hop harvest began with Cascade first week of March and we are now picking Tangerine Dream® (above) which is our most prolific hop with masses of large cones and is easy to pick. Halla® & Sticklebract to follow.

Mordue brewery of Newcastle UK have made a trial brew based on their Northumbrian Blonde using Tangerine Dream® hops in preparation for a 10bbl batch.

Peter Darby & myself amongst the hops in Faversham. Peter created the dwarf hops that are currently being grown in Britain. He is also reviewing all of the hops that were rejected in previous decades in view of how brewers and public tastes have changed.
