When ESB launched in 1971, breweries had long been in the habit of producing an 'ordinary' bitter and a 'special' bitter. The much maligned Watney's Red Barrel, satirised in Monty Python and served in the Fawlty Towers bar. It was the first keg beer in Britain. It was launched in 1931 as an alternative to cask beer for venues not equipped to dispense casks and then, after World War II, Watney's Red Barrel became a flagship product.
In the final years of the Watney Mann Brewing Company, the accountants took over the brewing where beer was based on cost rather than quality and this probably contributed to the critisism of the beers and the eventual demise of the company as a brewer of quality beer.
This recipe presents Watney's Red Barrel as it would have been before the cost accountants and kegging chemists had their baleful effect on its taste.
